Knowledge of pet nutrition is increasing every year and not all experts agree with each other on how certain data should be interpreted. One group supports the ‘scientific assembly theory’ where a diet can be scientifically engineered. Composed of all required nutrients, coming from a range of different sources and on a mathematical level everything your dog needs is present. A second groups theorizes that Mother Nature will always beat science. This school of thought we can call the ‘natural or holistic theory’. Human grade ingredients are used and any meat-by products or artificial additives or preservatives are avoided.
A new holistic dry dog food was launched in July 2007 by the Wellness brand of Natural Food and Treats for Pets. This product is developed by followers of the second school of thought. Wellness CORE Dog Food is based on the raw feeding philosophy and the belief that “You are what you eat!”.
With a wolves’ menu in mind this protein-focussed diet consists of high-quality meat and is grain-free. Protein is coming from sources like turkey and chicken meat, turkey meal, chicken meal and chicken liver. This is a complete dog food and thus also carbohydrates are present (a blend of vegetables, fruits and botanicals) and oils. It has no meat by-products, no artificial preservatives, colors or flavors and it is free of potential allergens such as corn, soy and wheat. This is important to know when you’re searching for instance for a wheat-free dog food because your dog has a food allergy to wheat or wheat gluten.
Wellness CORE dog food is a complete and balanced super-premium dog food with a low caloric density. The fat percentage ranges from 9 to 14% depending on the recipe. The kibbles are coated with an ActiCoat system; a blend of active probiotics that support your dog’s intestinal health and support the immune system.

I’ve recently started using this dog food with my 3 labs. They LOVE this stuff and can’t eat it fast enough. One of my labs is a mix mutt that we found years ago and has always been a picky and very slow eater. You could put a whole bowl of food down and she could eat off it for a week. Now I can’t do that anymore. She eats what I put down. So we’ve had to switch to the recommended feeding for her. She eats all the food and will eat it all in one sitting. Granted it’s only a cup, but she would have taken a couple days to go through that much before.
Too early to tell what the long term effect will be but I can tell you that they all are in good spirits and their stools are solid and not runny. So they are digesting the food just fine.
