Did you know skin diseases are among the main reasons for veterinary visits for dogs of all ages?
A dog’s skin and haircoat are one of the most visible signs of health and vitality. Hair is of great aesthetic importance to dog owners, and a source of great concern when it is not as it should be. Guess this is true for your own ‘coat’ as well
Many factors can cause your dog’s furry coat to loose it’s charismatic qualities, such as:
- Parasites: Like fleas and mites for instance.
- Nutritional deficiencies: Normal skin structure requires an adequate supply of several nutrients including proteins, fatty acids, zinc, copper, and vitamins A and B.
- Allergies: Most common is flea bite allergy. Other examples are atopy and dog food allergies.
- Auto-immune diseases: Where the immune system targets own skin cells.
- Onset of seborrhea: This is an inherited disorder involving hyperproliferation of skin tissue (the growth rate has gone over the top resulting in dandruff) and hairfollicles.
- Lipomas: Also known as skin tumors.
Or… your dog is just having his shedding period of course. So don’t go assuming the worst!! After all, man suffers most from the suffering he fears, but never appears.
