Are My Destructive Puppies Hungry?

This weekend a new dog owner asked me for advice on dog food. She recently enriched her life with two beautiful cute Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies.
The Rhodesian Ridgeback originated in Southern Africa and they are often called African Lion Hound because they are believed to be able to hold a lion at bay. You can recognize this dog breed by the ridge of hair on its back that runs in the opposite direction to the rest of their coat.
The problem here with these new puppies was that they are chewing everything that they can could a grip on. The new dog owner wondered whether they were hungry.
Ridgeback puppies can be very energetic and more in general: puppies like to chew on stuff! This doesn’t mean they are hungry. Chewing is a natural urge though dogs can also chew excessively out of boredom or sore teeth during teething periods. Give them something appropriate to relief this urge and prevent them from being destructive.
Teach them what’s ok to chew on and what’s not. Don’t give old shoes to your puppies as this make it very difficult for them to distinguish between worn-out shoes that they are allowed to chew on and your new Jimmy Choos that are off limits!
You can find multiple dog toys in pet specialty shops. Make sure you buy something that is safe and doesn’t look like something in your house that is off limits (including your children’s toys). Choose from robust puppy Kongs, little puppy chewing sticks, fun furry puppy-proof toys, hard chew treats, Rawhide bones etc.
| Toys keep your puppies entertained, improve dental health and will satisfy their chewing needs. |
New puppy owners often run into the same issues and have similar questions, so I’ll answer the questions on Dog Food Blog in a general way. More will follow soon, so stay tuned and subscribe to the RSS feed.
